This website – Guyana Oil and Gas Change – has been initiated by a group of Guyanese women at home and in the Diaspora, who have a history of working for human rights, social, economic and environmental justice. It is organized to give voice to the clear and present danger that many Guyanese face and will face if the current trends and patterns of oil and gas exploration and extraction continue.
We are committed to democratic and effective environmental governance, environmental justice and adherence to the rule of law. We know, as women, that the end point of environmental damage is harmful to women’s bodies, their children, families and communities. We know that the fight for environmental, social and other forms of justice the world over has been undertaken by many poor, marginalized and Indigenous women defenders, resisting land grabs, resource capture, environmental destruction and other forms of degradation. We stand against corporate irresponsibility and economic progress narrowly and erroneously measured as Gross Domestic Product (GDP), which promotes and extols trickle-down economics and corporate profits. We stand for economic justice based on equality and equity which means care and respect for our environment as the source of our sustenance. We are committed to the management of our resources wisely, safely and sustainably for our generation and future generations to come ensuring our right to clean food, water and air.
